The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army, located at Fort Stewart, Georgia, has implemented an unconventional reenlistment incentive program. To meet fiscal year 2027 goals, the unit is offering eligible personnel a special four-day pass timed to coincide with the November 19, 2026, release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI. To qualify for the administrative bonus, soldiers must commit to an additional two to six years of service and sign reenlistment contracts between August 1 and November 14, 2026. Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, noted the initiative was designed to create a “unique incentives program that connects to what soldiers are interested in.” The program was reportedly proposed by a new career counselor within the battalion. As of late August 2026, at least 20 out of approximately 130 eligible soldiers have accepted the offer. This initiative follows broader military efforts to engage with gaming communities through e-sports and gaming conventions. The program is remains specific to this battalion and is not an Army-wide policy, though military leadership has historically utilized other methods, such as financial bonuses and location changes, to encourage long-term service.
