U.S. Army XM1776 mobile howitzer development
Overview
The U.S. Army has received the first prototype of the XM1776 Mobile Tactical Cannon, a 155mm self-propelled howitzer manufactured by Hanwha Defense USA. Based on the South Korean K9 howitzer design, the system utilizes a wheeled, diesel-powered chassis to provide increased mobility and firepower compared to the aging M777 towed artillery systems it is intended to replace.
The acquisition is part of a contract valued at nearly $263 million for the procurement of up to 18 systems for prototyping, testing, and experimentation. The XM1776 features a fully automated turret and is designed for rapid deployment and relocation to avoid detection. Technical specifications indicate the system can reach road speeds of 100 km/h with a range of up to 700 km.
To support the program and build a domestic industrial base, Hanwha is establishing an integration and testing facility in Opelika, Alabama.
