US asylum denial rate increases

While hundreds of new judges have been hired, contributing to an increase in resolved cases, the approval rate has dropped sharply from 48% in March 2023 to just 5.5% in June 2026.

The shift in outcomes is observed across various demographics, including Chinese asylum seekers, whose grant rate fell to 9% in June 2026 from 37% in the previous year. Additionally, reports indicate increased enforcement actions, such as the detention of migrants with pending asylum claims and work permits.
