US auto refinancing trends and consumer savings
Overview
At the start of 2026, the total value of refinanced car loans in the United States reached $3.4 billion. According to data from Experian, this figure represents a 79% increase compared to two years prior.
Refinancing is being utilized by consumers to manage vehicle debt through various methods, such as reducing the annual percentage rate (APR) to lower monthly payments or total interest costs. Drivers also use refinancing to shorten repayment timelines to pay off debt more quickly.
Recent data from Caribou suggests that Americans may overpay by $54 billion annually on car loans due to a lack of rate shopping. Drivers with larger initial loan balances typically realize the most significant savings, with those in Louisiana, New Mexico, and Washington reporting the highest average monthly savings.
Savings vary by vehicle type. Diesel vehicle owners see the highest average monthly savings at $234. Electric vehicle (EV) owners saved an average of $190 per month, up from $176 the previous year. This increase in EV-related savings is supported by a rise in used EV values, which have increased by more than 5% since the start of 2026, thereby improving loan-to-value ratios for borrowers.
