U.S. Border Patrol has conducted several rescue operations involving migrants attempting to enter the United States through various hazardous methods. In early September, agents in the Laredo and El Paso sectors performed rescues involving individuals struggling in the Rio Grande and others trapped in deep mud while navigating difficult terrain. Laredo Sector Patrol Chief Desi De León noted that such incidents highlight the “life-threatening dangers” of the river’s currents. By mid-September, authorities in the Del Rio Sector intercepted three migrants from Mexico, Nicaragua, and Honduras who were hiding inside an automotive transport railcar near Knippa, Texas. This incident followed a similar rescue on August 30, where eight individuals were found in an identical railcar. Del Rio Sector chief patrol agent Anthony “Scott” Good warned of the extreme risks associated with human smuggling via freight rail networks. On September 20, agents in the Del Rio Sector conducted another rescue near Knippa, Texas, after a canine unit discovered three migrants—of Mexican, Nicaraguan, and Honduran nationality—inside a stationary autorack car. The individuals were found concealed within the beds of pickup trucks inside the locked rail car and had no means of self-release. This follows the previous pattern of rescues in the area, including the August 30 incident involving eight people on the same rail siding. On September 14, agents from the Eagle Pass South Border Patrol Station rescued four migrants—two Bolivians, one Cuban, and one Colombian—who were trapped inside a portable water tank in a pickup truck in South Texas. Agents were forced to use power tools to cut open the plastic tank to reach the individuals. Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony Good described the smuggling method as ‘dangerous and barbaric,’ stating the migrants were treated as ‘mere human cargo’ with no means of escape. A 19-year-old U.S. citizen driving the vehicle was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations on federal human smuggling charges.
