In late July 2026 the United States announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of senior Jalisco New Generation Cartel operator Juan Carlos Valencia González. The following week, Mexican federal forces, including the Army, captured Alfonso Fernández Magallón, known as “Poncho La Quiringua”, the alleged leader of the Cartel de Los Reyes, in Los Reyes, Michoacán. The arrest, confirmed by Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch on 1 August 2026, triggered road blockades and vehicle arson in Los Reyes and Peribán, prompting a federal‑state security response with helicopters and National Guard units. Fernández Magallón was transferred under heavy security to the maximum‑security federal prison El Altiplano. On 3 August 2026 the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration added Valencia González to its most‑wanted list, designating him the number‑one target and raising the reward to up to $25 million for information leading to his capture. U.S. officials, including Ambassador Ronald Johnson, praised the operation and reiterated the bounty, noting the arrests dealt a major blow to the Cartel de Los Reyes and its ties to the broader Carteles Unidos network, which the United States has designated as a foreign terrorist organization. Two days later, on 5 August 2026, the U.S. State Department confirmed the $25 million reward—up from the earlier $5 million—offered for Juan Carlos González, a dual U.S.–Mexican citizen and stepson of the slain CJNG boss El Mencho. González, known as “Pelón”, assumed leadership of the CJNG after El Mencho’s death in February. The Trump administration pledged a total of $100 million in rewards for various CJNG leaders, imposed visa restrictions on their families, sanctioned 50 individuals and companies linked to the cartel, and froze assets, reinforcing the CJNG’s designation as a foreign terrorist organization.
