US car price surge 2026
Overview
U.S. car buyers continued to confront record‑high vehicle prices in mid‑2026, with the average new car at $48,899 and three‑year‑old used models around $32,553. Added technology and premium trims, together with lingering supply‑chain constraints, kept prices elevated and pushed many borrowers into 84‑month loans. Interest rates varied widely, from roughly 4.5 % for well‑qualified borrowers to about 16 % for those with weaker credit.
Negative equity surged, reaching 29.6 % of trade‑ins in Q2 2026 – the highest quarterly share since 2020 – with an average underwater deficit of $6,884. By late July, the average amount financed for new cars hit a record $44,156, and one in five new‑car owners were paying $1,000 or more each month. Interest rates hovered around 7 % for new‑car loans and 10.5 % for used‑car financing, while zero‑percent deals fell to just 1.2 % of transactions. Underwater trade‑ins averaged a $7,183 deficit in Q1 2026, and 6.3 % of used‑car purchasers also faced $1,000‑plus monthly payments.
A June 2026 Edmunds analysis highlighted state‑by‑state variation in total ownership costs, with an annual average of $4,507 (excluding payments). Nevada topped the list at $6,119, driven largely by insurance premiums above $3,400, while New Hampshire was cheapest at $3,030. The report urged buyers to consider lightly used or off‑lease electric vehicles, broaden their search radius, obtain pre‑approved financing and negotiate trade‑in values to mitigate costs.
Later in August, data showed that record‑high prices for trucks and SUVs often exceeded $55,000, and APRs of 7‑9 % combined with the practice of rolling negative‑equity trade‑ins into new loans were pushing average monthly obligations above $1,000 for a growing share of purchasers.
