In early August 2026, cattle futures experienced mixed trading following U.S. employment data that showed unexpected job losses. Despite market volatility, cattle futures saw slight increases driven by technical buying and short-covering, while beef wholesale prices showed strength. By late August, cattle and hog futures at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange saw upward movement. Specifically, October and December live cattle, as well as September and October feeder cattle, closed higher. The USDA reported a light supply with moderate demand, noting that estimated cattle slaughter rose to 104,000 head. While futures rose due to oversold signals, the cash hog markets struggled for direction and boxed beef prices closed lower due to light demand. In Ontario, pork reports indicated that the U.S. CME price for dressed weight was down compared to the previous day. At the start of September, livestock futures continued to show varying trends. October live cattle closed $4.07 higher at $217.02 and December live cattle rose $4.50 to $219.22. Feeder cattle also trended higher, supported by lower corn prices. Direct cash cattle trade remained quiet following a long holiday weekend, with steers and heifers in Kansas selling at steady to slightly lower prices. USDA reports indicated moderate demand, though worsening pasture conditions may prompt ranchers to bring cattle to market earlier. In the pork sector, lean hog futures closed higher following oversold signals. Boxed beef prices showed mixed results, with Choice cuts increasing by $1.40 to $377.57, while Select cuts declined by $0.48 to $355.39.
