Following their departure from Chengdu, the two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, arrived at Zoo Atlanta in Georgia, United States, on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The arrival follows a 16-hour chartered FedEx Boeing 777 flight from China. The transfer is a key component of a ten-year international cooperative research agreement on giant panda conservation between China and the United States. This move follows a high-level summit in Washington between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. While the summit addressed trade and artificial intelligence, the panda transfer was highlighted as a tangible symbol of goodwill and a significant gesture of friendship between the two nations, despite ongoing geopolitical and economic tensions. President Xi previously described the pandas as “ambassadors of friendship” between the two nations. During the flight, the pandas, both born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, were provided with steamed corn buns, bamboo shoots, and carrots to ensure their comfort. American animal keepers accompanied the pair during the journey. Upon arrival, the pandas were transported to a biosecure facility at the zoo’s new panda complex to begin a mandatory one-month quarantine period. Zoo officials report that both animals are eating well and adjusting to their new environment. While the pandas are not yet visible to the public, an announcement regarding public viewing dates will be made at a later time. To support their decade-long stay, Chinese veterinarians and keepers will remain at the zoo to assist with acclimation and care, while Zoo Atlanta has renovated specialized habitats and secured a local supply of bamboo. This initiative, part of a “panda diplomacy” effort, aims to deepen scientific exchange in areas such as breeding, disease prevention, and habitat protection. The arrival marks a return to panda exhibits for Zoo Atlanta, which had been without pandas since the conclusion of its previous program in 2024.
