Key areas of contention include artificial intelligence, software, and semiconductor design, with semiconductors being characterized as the “new oil of humanity.” Recent developments have escalated trade tensions, with the U.S. government accusing approximately 40 countries of facilitating illegal transshipment to help China evade import tariffs. A report titled “The Great Transshipment Scheme” alleges that Chinese companies use third-party nations to perform final assembly or processing to misrepresent product origins. Within Latin America, Brazil has been identified as a significant economic integration partner that may “simulate transformation” to alter product origins. To combat these alleged losses, which some estimates place between US$ 19 billion and US$ 34 billion in tariff revenue, the U.S. is developing an AI-driven “detective frontier” to monitor suspicious trade routes.
