By September 24, conditions at the Jersey Shore escalated to a high risk of life-threatening rip currents, in effect through Saturday evening. Forecasters warned of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions due to large breaking waves reaching up to 12 feet in the surf zone. Northeast winds were expected to range between 22 and 30 mph, with seas building between 10 and 16 feet, particularly overnight. Authorities advised beachgoers to obey all posted flags and use flotation devices. On September 27, the high risk of life-threatening rip currents at the Jersey Shore remained in effect through Sunday evening. Forecasts indicated seas reaching 8 to 11 feet with large breaking waves between 1 and 6 feet in the surf zone. Strong north winds with gusts up to 50 knots were expected, and inexperienced swimmers were advised to stay out of the water. Concurrently, Hurricane Nolo began impacting Hawaii, generating swells that triggered a high surf advisory for southeast-facing shores of the Big Island. Advisory-level surf was also expected along the east-facing shores of Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai, though conditions were projected to diminish late Sunday as the hurricane moved away. By October 1, the risk of rip currents at the Jersey Shore had decreased to moderate, though life-threatening conditions remained possible. Ocean temperatures were reported between 64°F and 68°F, slightly above the normal range of 60°F to 63°F. Seas were expected to be 2 to 3 feet for the day and evening, with winds projected to increase slightly on Friday.
