Community banks in the US are increasingly preparing for the rise of digital assets, though many view these assets as a threat to traditional business models. A 2026 survey by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) indicates that 60% of community banks expect stablecoins to have a moderate or significant impact on deposit erosion. While 18% of banks plan to launch tokenized deposit products and 16% intend to offer stablecoin solutions within the next 12 months, there is a notable trend toward exiting existing services; half of banks currently offering tokenized deposits and two-thirds of those offering stablecoin solutions plan to exit within the next year. Research from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) suggests that even marginal increases in bank deposit rates can slow stablecoin market capitalization growth. A one basis point increase in average US bank deposit rates can lead to a roughly 3 percentage point deceleration in stablecoin growth over ten weeks. This sensitivity varies by asset, with USDC potentially seeing a 4.8 percentage point decrease compared to 1.9 percentage points for USDT. In the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, stablecoin deposits have reached $24 billion, driven by marking a 560.8% increase over the last three years. Data from Token Terminal indicates users seeking yield. are moving stablecoins into lending protocols to earn yield, with USDC leading at approximately $9.2 billion (38.2% share), followed by USDT at $4.9 billion and USDe at $2.2 billion. Market liquidity is concentrated in Aave V3 and Morpho Blue, which together account for 67.7% of tracked deposits. Meanwhile, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) has projected that widespread payment stablecoin adoption could reduce community bank lending by at least $850 billion. This follows an October 2026 OCC rule prohibiting payment stablecoin issuers from paying interest or yield solely for the holding or use of tokens, aiming to prevent the evasion of existing prohibitions on stablecoin rewards.
