US debate over transgender youth medical care
Overview
Research and debate regarding the mental health impacts of medical interventions for transgender youth have intensified. An NIH-funded study conducted through the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles found that puberty blockers and hormone treatments did not result in significant mental health improvements for participants. The report noted that while suicidality decreased and life satisfaction increased over a two-year period, mental health scores remained in a ‘clinically non-significant range’ and were ‘on par with the population at large.’
Following these findings, the medical watchdog group Do No Harm released a study disputing the link between restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors and increased suicide rates. The group characterized previous research supporting such links as “shoddy and dishonest,” arguing that states with restrictions do not see spikes in youth suicide. Conversely, The Trevor Project has defended its own research, maintaining that “anti-transgender” laws increase suicide risks among young people.
