President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled ‘Decreasing Housing Costs for the American People’ to lower expenses related to homeownership and mortgages. The directive instructs the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to launch a pilot program to proactively cancel mortgage insurance premiums for borrowers meeting specific equity requirements. To reduce closing costs, the order directs the FHFA to make a title insurance waiver pilot permanent, allowing eligible homeowners to use automated property ownership checks for refinancing. Furthermore, the Departments of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs have been tasked with examining ways to lower interest rates on single-family home loans within their respective programs. The executive action also establishes a multi-agency task force, specifically the Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation, to recommend modernizing manufacturing methods for factory-built homes eligible for federal assistance. This working group is intended to streamline certification, permitting, and financing for modern manufactured and modular housing. Officials, including FHFA Director Bill Pulte and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, expressed support for the measures, stating they aim to reduce financial burdens for millions of Americans.
