Reports regarding federal fraud in the United States indicate significant annual losses across various government programs. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) previously estimated that tax fraud accounts for between $116 billion and $304 billion in annual losses, noting that the IRS lacks a coordinated agency-wide antifraud strategy. Data from the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud reported that agencies have uncovered approximately $260.7 billion in fraud, with the Small Business Administration uncovering $122.9 billion, primarily related to pandemic-era emergency loan programs. Subsequent analysis by the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) suggested that total federal fraud could cost taxpayers as much as $521 billion annually, or roughly 7% of total federal spending. The FGA identified major vulnerabilities in New GAO estimates indicate that the federal government lost between $233 billion and $521 billion annually to fraud between fiscal years 2018 and 2022, affecting programs such as Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, and food stamps, noting that only 64 of more than 2,200 federal payment programs are reviewed for pandemic relief. In fiscal year 2025, improper payments each year. for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) alone exceeded $100 billion. These inaccuracies have direct implications for state budgets under the 2025 ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ legislation. States with SNAP error rates exceeding 6% must cover 5% to 15% of their total SNAP payments. For instance, Louisiana reported a SNAP error rate of over 8% in fiscal year 2025 and is projected to face costs of approximately $100 million starting in October 2026 if the rate remains above the threshold.
