US gold reserve revaluation discussions

Overview

Discussions have emerged regarding the potential revaluation of United States gold reserves to address rising federal debt and interest costs. While the U.S. holds approximately 261.5 million ounces of gold, the official book value has remained fixed at $42.22 per ounce since 1973, totaling roughly $11 billion. At current market rates of approximately $4,000 per ounce, the reserves would be valued at roughly $1 trillion.

Speculation regarding the monetization of the U.S. balance sheet and the creation of a sovereign wealth fund has fueled interest in these holdings. Some legislative proposals concerning a strategic bitcoin reserve have also included suggestions to revalue the nation’s gold.

However, officials have pushed back against these ideas. The administration has stated that such a move is not under serious consideration, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has previously denied plans to revalue the reserves. Financial analysts, including Jurrien Timmer of Fidelity Investments, have warned that attempting to revalue reserves to fund government spending could “backfire, potentially damaging the US dollar and increasing term premiums on Treasury yields.”
