The United States is advancing the Golden Dome space-based missile defense program, an initiative announced by President Donald Trump in May 2025. The program, overseen by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, involves significant investment to develop interceptor prototypes and an orbital magazine. The project timeline includes ground trials in 2025, flight tests between 2026 and 2027, and a full on-orbit demonstration planned for 2029. Despite the progression of testing and the awarding of contracts to firms such as SpaceX and Lockheed Martin, technical progress, the program faces significant critical financial uncertainty. While the Department of Defense requested $17.5 billion for fiscal year 2027, only about $398 million is currently allocated in the regular base budget. US U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein has warned that without congressional action via a second reconciliation package, operations could face a halt starting October 1, 2026. Technically, the program has reached several milestones. Companies including SpaceX and Northrop Grumman have completed initial tests for space-based interceptors, focusing on propulsion and data transmission. The initiative utilizes a prize-based competition involving 12 companies to develop technologies through four testing gates. Physical infrastructure is also expanding, with ground broken at Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, Virginia. Furthermore, a complex integrated test was successfully conducted in June 2026 at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The program aims to achieve an initial integrated capability by 2028 to provide layered defense against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats.
