U.S. government UAP investigation and transparency

The United States government has transitioned its approach to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) from secrecy toward formal investigation and transparency. This shift includes the 2020 establishment of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force by the Department of Defense and the subsequent creation of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).

Legislative and executive actions have furthered this movement, notably through the 2023 Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act and the May 2026 release of over 450 declassified documents by President Donald Trump. Congressional oversight has also increased, with House Committee hearings focusing on whistleblower protection and transparency. These proceedings have included the presentation of military footage, such as a 2024 incident involving a Hellfire missile striking an unidentified object near Yemen.

Historically, the phenomenon was often linked to secret military testing, such as the high-altitude aircraft programs at Area 51 confirmed by declassified CIA documents. Current efforts aim to move the subject from fringe speculation into the realms of national security and mainstream scientific research.
