US health disparities in chronic disease and cancer

Overview

Research indicates significant health disparities in the United States, particularly regarding chronic conditions and cancer mortality among Black women and rural populations.

Studies show that stroke rates among adults aged 20 to 54 nearly doubled between 1993 and 2020. Black women face disproportionate risks, including being twice as likely as white women to suffer a stroke and having a higher prevalence of hypertension. Additionally, Black women under 50 die from breast cancer at approximately twice the rate of white women.

Further investigation into breast cancer mortality highlights that Black women are more than twice as likely to develop aggressive basal-type tumors. While survival is heavily influenced by tumor molecular behavior, mortality rates remain higher for Black women. Concurrently, a widening gap has emerged between rural and urban populations; death rates in rural areas are declining more slowly, with projections suggesting rural women could face mortality rates 13 percent higher than urban women by 2035 due to factors such as lower income and limited treatment access.
