In early August 2026, the National Weather Service issued heat advisories for large parts of eastern Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, and New York’s Hudson Valley, warning of heat‑index values approaching 109 °F and 100 °F respectively. The alerts urged residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and seek air‑conditioned environments. A few days later, New York City escalated its response as the heat wave persisted. Mayor Zohran Mamdani activated emergency plans, opening hundreds of cooling centers across all five boroughs. Catholic Charities distributed 1,200 fans to older adults, and the city deployed 21 COOL vans to check on seniors and provide transport to cooling sites. Additional resources, such as LinkNYC kiosks offering directions to the nearest center, were made available, and residents were instructed to use 311 for non‑emergency concerns and 911 for immediate danger.
