The US-India bilateral trade agreement has progressed from a call for accelerated negotiations to a state of near-completion. Initially, the US-India Business Council (USIBC) urged both governments to finalize a deal by the end of 2026, describing it as a “historic” milestone intended to lower trade barriers, minimize tariffs, and enhance cooperation in emerging technologies. Subsequent reports indicate that approximately 90 percent of the negotiation work is finished. A senior US State Department official noted that resolving the final details could “unleash another level” of bilateral relations. India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, also indicated the pact is nearly finalized, noting that India seeks to secure competitive advantages in the American market. This follows an interim framework established in February 2026 after adjustments to US tariff policies. Recent developments indicate that the interim bilateral trade agreement (BTA) will be finalized in light of changing circumstances. Minister Goyal noted that shifts in U.S. tariff policies—including a uniform 10 percent tariff applied to all countries for a 150-day period—necessitate a review to ensure the deal aligns with national interests. Goyal has met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss these issues as India seeks lower tariffs to remain competitive.
