US infant deaths in dumpsters

Overview

Two separate incidents involving the discovery of deceased infants in or near dumpsters have been reported in the United States.

In South Los Angeles, 19-year-old Takiyah Rochelle Babers was charged with murder and felony assault after her 4-month-old daughter was found unresponsive in a dumpster near the Pueblo Del Rio housing project. An advocate for the suspect’s foster parents alleged that security footage shows Babers throwing the child into the container. The infant had been under the care of her grandmother prior to the incident.

In Fort Worth, Texas, 23-year-old Avia Cantrell was charged with capital murder after her newborn daughter was found inside a suitcase near a dumpster. Police documents indicate Cantrell admitted to leaving the infant face-down in a motel bathtub for approximately 30 minutes following birth. Cantrell’s partner, Camron Baker, was charged with abuse of a corpse for allegedly placing the infant in the suitcase and discarding it. Baker reportedly told investigators they avoided medical assistance because they did not want to ‘catch a case.’
