U.S. infrastructure grant reallocation controversy

Overview

On July 8, 2026 Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy redirected $1.73 billion of BUILD grants from DEI‑focused bike‑lane projects to traditional road, bridge, port, rail, transit and aviation work, branding the move as a correction of “Biden‑era DEI pet projects.” The shift prompted criticism that equity and climate priorities were being abandoned.

Later that week the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington asked the DOT inspector general to investigate whether Duffy had used agency resources for personal gain, citing a retweet from the DOT’s official X account that promoted his wife’s book and a government‑funded travel series involving transportation firms. DOT officials said the post was shared inadvertently and was removed.

In late July, Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, pressed Duffy on the financing of a 10‑state “Great American Road Trip” promoted by the bipartisan America 250 commission, noting that the nonprofit organizing the tour received donations from companies Duffy oversees, such as Toyota, Boeing and United Airlines. Duffy defended the initiative as tourism‑promoting. Simultaneously, his directive to the Federal Highway Administration to strip bike‑related content from agency sites and his call to cut federal bike‑lane funding spurred protests and a lawsuit that resulted in a federal judge pausing the demolition of a Washington, D.C., bike lane pending further justification.
