US international tourism arrival decline

International tourism arrivals to the United States have experienced a downward trend throughout 2026. Despite a temporary boost in spending during the FIFA World Cup, data from the National Travel and Tourism Office indicates that non-citizen arrivals fell by 3.5 percent year-over-year between January and July 2026. Specifically, July saw a 3 percent decrease in foreign arrivals, with overseas market arrivals dropping by 7 percent.

Industry representatives and data suggest several contributing factors to this decline, including high airfares, expensive accommodations, complex travel logistics, and long visa interview wait times. Additionally, stricter immigration policies and a bond requirement for visitors from 50 countries reportedly caused an 80 percent drop in arrivals from those specific nations. Tourism from Canada also saw a 20 percent decrease in the previous year, attributed to political rhetoric and reactions against tariffs.

Recent data from the US Travel Association shows the decline accelerating, with tourism falling 2 percent year-on-year in June, 7 percent in July, and 11 percent in August. Total visitor numbers are currently on track to be 20 percent lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Geoff Freeman, CEO of the US Travel Association, identified additional drivers for this trend, including trade disputes and tariffs leading to boycotts, and logistical difficulties for Asian travelers due to the inability to fly over Russian airspace. Freeman also highlighted concerns regarding misinformation, noting that travelers are deterred by “inaccurate reports and fears of being detained or having their devices searched upon entry.” He has called for increased government and private sector partnership to signal that the United States remains “open for business.”
