During the initial military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, a missile strike hit the Shajareh Tayyebah Elementary School in Minab on February 28. While death toll estimates vary, Amnesty International recorded 156 deaths, including 120 children, while official Iranian figures reached as many as 168. Iran claims the school was targeted by two American Tomahawk missiles, though the United States and Israel have not officially claimed responsibility. An Associated Press investigation found evidence suggesting at least one U.S. missile hit the school, but the Trump administration has not released Pentagon findings or accepted responsibility. Iranian administration spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani has linked the school bombing to a subsequent U.S. strike on a wedding gathering at Kohestak Port in Sirik County, arguing both incidents demonstrate how civilians are being killed while engaged in daily life. This Sirik attack followed Iran’s March 2 decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, a move Tehran described as self-defense. In response, local authorities in Hormozgan Province are transforming the school ruins into a memorial and war museum to serve as a historical record. Hormozgan Governor Mohammad Ashouri Taziani has overseen these efforts. Additionally, a section of the Minab cemetery has been dedicated to the victims, though residents report that some bodies, including at least three individuals, have yet to be recovered. Local families, such as those represented by Heydar Sadeghi, continue to gather at the site to mourn those lost in the blast.
