By mid-September 2026, the dengue fever situation in Florida escalated significantly, marking one of the state’s most substantial surges in decades. The Florida Department of Health confirmed the first fatality related to the outbreak: an 80-year-old woman in Hillsborough County who died on September 4 following complications including septic shock and multi-organ failure. Local transmission has reached unprecedented levels, particularly in Hillsborough County, which officials describe as having a “wildly unusual” number of infections. As of mid-September, the state has recorded 152 locally acquired cases, the second-highest total on record following 2023. Of these, 134 cases are concentrated in the area near Tampa. This follows earlier reports in early September that total cases—combining local transmissions and travel-associated instances—had exceeded 200. In response to the rising numbers, health departments in Hillsborough, Orange, and Pinellas counties have intensified mosquito control measures, including aerial spraying and house-to-house inspections, to target Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Medical experts and officials suggest that climate change and recent weather patterns have enabled warm-weather mosquitoes to expand their geographic reach and multiply. While many infections remain asymptomatic, severe cases can lead to high fever, headache, shock, and serious bleeding. Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo continues to urge residents to eliminate standing water and use insect repellent to mitigate the spread. By late September, the outbreak's reach appeared to extend into Collier County, where the Department of Health and the Mosquito Control District have intensified surveillance and fumigation efforts. These measures include weekly trap monitoring and the use of biological larvicides to treat standing water.
