In July 2026, former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman was reported to be hospitalized while serving a Russian prison sentence that began in 2022. By early August he had been transferred to the psychiatric ward of a civilian emergency hospital in Voronezh, described as being in a catatonic‑like, dissociative stupor and unable to eat on his own. He had been receiving tube feeding for more than six weeks, and his advocates alleged torture and possible mind‑altering drugs. Russian authorities continued to bar his mother and lawyer from visits despite a judicial order. The U.S. State Department and the White House have pressed Russia to allow urgent medical treatment in the United States. Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised Gilman's case with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a meeting in Manila on 23 July, but Russian officials have not responded. A Voronezh court added two years for alleged assaults on prison staff, bringing his total sentence to ten years. Advocacy groups continue to demand access and independent medical assessment. By early August 2026, Gilman's condition was reported as critical. He remains in the psychiatric ward of the Voronezh civilian hospital, unable to eat and dependent on tube feeding. His sister and advocacy groups say he may be near death, while Russian authorities still deny his mother and consular officials regular visits despite a court order. The United States has reiterated calls for his release to receive urgent medical care in the United States. Gilman is one of at least ten Americans known to be imprisoned in Russia.
