US-Mexico border security and aviation policy
Overview
The United States has implemented a temporary flight restriction for unauthorized drones along the US-Mexico border. This measure covers a strip approximately 1.8 kilometers north of the border and applies to airspace up to 121 meters above the ground. The ban aims to prevent criminal organizations from using drones to monitor security operations or facilitate illicit activities like drug trafficking. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that U.S. forces are prepared to use directed energy weapons to shoot down cartel drones that threaten national sovereignty.
Concurrently, the U.S. Department of Transportation has revoked previous restrictions on Mexican airlines, allowing carriers to expand routes and increase flight frequencies from Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM) and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to the United States.
Following this decision, Aeromexico is evaluating opportunities to increase flight capacity to the U.S. The lifting of these curbs ends months of uncertainty regarding air connectivity, which previously stemmed from concerns that Mexico had violated a 2015 air transportation agreement during the reorganization of flight allocations between Mexico City’s major airports.
