U.S. President Donald Trump has engaged in public commentary regarding Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during campaign rallies in Arizona and South Carolina. In Arizona, Trump praised Sheinbaum as an “elegant woman with ‘the most beautiful voice’” and referenced a telephone conversation concerning a proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” He noted the political sensitivity of such remarks, stating, “I hope that is not insulting.” During a subsequent rally in Clemson, South Carolina, Trump revisited the nomenclature dispute, recounting a conversation where Sheinbaum allegedly asked if the name change was a joke, to which he replied he was not joking. In the same speech, Trump questioned Sheinbaum’s transition from being a ballet dancer to leading Mexico, remarking, “She was a ballet dancer. I don't know how the hell she went from being a dancer to the president of Mexico!” While Trump has used the renaming as a political talking point, the International Hydrographic Organization has not modified the official international name. Sheinbaum has clarified that while she practiced ballet from age six until her second year of university, she transitioned to studying physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and later participated in rowing. Her academic credentials include a degree in physics and master's and doctoral degrees in energy engineering, alongside her previous work as a researcher and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
