US military deployment in South America

The United States has initiated a series of military deployments to South America to combat transnational criminal activities, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and illegal mining. This effort is being conducted through U.S. Southern Command and involves cooperation with regional partners such as Colombia and Ecuador.

Initially, the U.S. began redeploying MQ-9 Reaper drones from Africa to the region to provide surveillance over trafficking corridors and borders. In Ecuador, two drones became operational to monitor the northern border with Colombia and Pacific maritime routes. Colombia also entered an agreement to receive three drones on loan to target groups like the ELN and Clan del Golfo.

Following the drone deployment, the U.S. expanded its aerial presence in Ecuador by deploying two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters. These aircraft, equipped with external fuel tanks for long-range missions, are operating out of Taura Air Base to support naval operations. This security strategy is supported by significant U.S. financial commitments, including $45 million for narcotics combat and $10 million for the eradication of illegal mining.
