US military readiness and personnel policy shifts

The Trump administration has introduced several initiatives aimed at refocusing the United States military on combat lethality, discipline, and physical fitness.

In late October 2026, officials identified declining testosterone levels among American men as a potential threat to national defense. This follows Pentagon screening guidelines for male service members aged 30 and older. Officials noted that declining hormone levels could impact the physical demands of service, alongside broader recruitment challenges where a high percentage of young Americans are deemed ineligible due to obesity and chronic disease.

This follows an earlier policy shift initiated via the Executive Order ‘Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness’. Under the direction of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the administration moved to phase out diversity programs and the recognition of gender identities, effectively implementing a ban on transgender personnel to ensure the military does not serve as a “testing ground for sociopolitical ideologies”. This directive has faced political opposition and resistance from certain bodies within the Navy and Marine Corps.
