U.S. military SIG SAUER handgun safety reviews

Overview

Following the death of an Airman at F. E. Warren Air Base in July 2025, which was initially reported as an accidental discharge, the U.S. military conducted extensive inspections of the SIG SAUER M17 and M18 Modular Handgun System.

The Department of War and the Department of the Air Force examined over 113,000 firearms, involving the firing of more than 1.5 million rounds. Investigators concluded that alleged “uncommanded discharges” were the result of the trigger being pulled rather than mechanical failure.

The Air Force reported that 98.6% of the inspected M18 pistols were in satisfactory condition, with the remainder requiring repairs or showing minor pitting. Having determined the pistols are “safe, reliable, and functional,” the Air Force has begun returning the weapons to service.
