U.S. military technological and domain adaptation

U.S. military leaders are addressing the integration of advanced technologies and the expansion of combat domains to prepare for future warfare. Initially, focus was placed on the challenges of artificial intelligence, with Army Intelligence Chief AI Officer Mario Roberts describing the transition as a “turbulent” and “messy” period due to a lack of specialized workforce skills. The practical application of unmanned technology was highlighted by Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, who cited a June rescue operation near Oman as a milestone involving an uncrewed surface vessel.

Subsequent discussions expanded to the necessity of adapting to autonomous systems and multi-domain threats. Gen. Caine warned that military formations must prepare for environments where they are “hunted by autonomous systems, jammed across the spectrum and tracked in real time.”

Furthermore, leadership emphasized the importance of space warfare capabilities. Lieutenant General Gregory Gagnon noted that forces must be ready to fight from the “bottom of the sea to the cis-lunar region.” This follows official recognition of offensive “space control weapons” in orbit, a move intended to respond to maneuvers by China and Russia.
