The United States is expanding its naval presence at the Rota Naval Base in Spain through the arrival of the USS John Basilone (DDG-122). This Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer is the sixth vessel to be stationed at the base, fulfilling an expansion agreement reached between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and U.S. President Joe Biden during the 2022 NATO summit. The deployment brings the total U.S. personnel at the joint Spanish-U.S. base to over 6,000. These six destroyers serve as pillars of the NATO missile defense shield, providing advanced detection and operational flexibility across maritime regions ranging from the Arctic Circle to the Cape of Good Hope, including the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Following its transfer from Naval Station Mayport, Florida, the USS John Basilone arrived equipped with the advanced AEGIS combat system. U.S. Ambassador Benjamin León Jr. emphasized that the addition of the sixth destroyer “increases operational flexibility and strengthens NATO’s deterrent capabilities.” While naval officials noted that the military-to-military relationship at Rota remains unaffected, the deployment occurs amidst broader political tensions between the U.S. administration and Spain regarding NATO and other geopolitical issues.
