U.S. Navy aircraft procurement programs

Overview

The U.S. Navy is managing multiple defense procurement processes for aircraft. In the F/A-XX stealth fighter program, the competition has narrowed to Boeing and Northrop Grumman. Admiral Daryl Caudle noted that internal evaluations were finalized in mid-August, leaving the final decision to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Separately, the Navy has updated the schedule for its Undergraduate Jet Training System. The deadline for proposals has been extended from September 9 to October 30, pushing the expected selection date to June 30 of the following year. The Navy also increased the price cap for the engineering development and production phase from $1.8 billion to $2.7 billion. Following the withdrawals of Lockheed Martin and Boeing, the remaining contenders for the training aircraft are the M-346N, proposed by a Beechcraft/Leonardo consortium, and the Freedom aircraft, proposed by Sierra Nevada Corporation in partnership with Northrop Grumman and General Atomics.
