The United States Navy is experiencing significant challenges regarding fleet readiness, maintenance, and industrial capacity. Initial reports highlighted a potential maintenance crisis caused by limited shipyard availability, with only two shipyards capable of performing necessary repairs for the Navy’s 11 aircraft carriers. Analysts warned of a buildup of “maintenance debt” that could lead to long queues and a reduced carrier presence at deployment sites.

Subsequent developments expanded these concerns to include aging vessels, maintenance backlogs, and specific operational vulnerabilities, such as the USS Benfold losing power. The strain on personnel and equipment has been exacerbated by long-term deployments of vessels like the USS Lincoln.

In addition to infrastructure constraints, the Navy faces debates over future design specifications. Proposals to revert from advanced electromagnetic catapult systems to traditional steam catapults and alter island structures have raised concerns among experts regarding increased costs, extended delivery timelines, and reduced efficiency. These internal challenges occur as the United States faces a widening gap in shipbuilding speed compared to the expanding Chinese surface fleet.
