US Navy port visit to Phuket, Thailand

Overview

In early October 2026, Phuket authorities prepared for a large-scale port visit by approximately 5,000 US Navy personnel. To manage the arrival of crew members from the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush and the destroyer USS Delbert D. Black, local officials established a 24-hour operations center and implemented safety measures, such as prohibiting the rental or riding of motorcycles by sailors.

On October 4, the vessels arrived off the coast of Phuket for a scheduled port call. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the guided-missile destroyer carry a combined total of 5,109 personnel, including 4,820 crew members on the carrier. This visit marks the strike group’s first port call since departing the United States on March 31, following a 188-day deployment at sea. The group recently concluded operations in the Arabian Sea, where the carrier supported maritime operations related to regional tensions involving Iran and the conflict in Yemen. Following this deployment, the USS George Washington remains the primary carrier strike group in the region.

During the visit, which is expected to last until October 10, thousands of sailors are scheduled to participate in rest and recreation (R&R) activities. Strike group leaders are also set to meet with Thai civilian and military officials to discuss the maritime alliance between the two nations, which the U.S. Navy described as the “oldest partner in Asia” and the “only treaty ally in mainland Southeast Asia.” Crew members are also expected to participate in community relations events, including a soccer match.
