U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a modernization of the American passport system. The initiative includes a shift toward digital applications via new platforms, such as America.gov or login.gov, which aims to allow first-time applicants to complete the process entirely online. This digital transition is intended to eliminate the necessity for in-person appointments, physical form printing, and pharmacy photo visits by permitting digital selfies. As the rollout progresses, the digital system is expected to begin in 2027. In addition to first-time applicants, the online capability will extend to those renewing passports issued more than 15 years ago or those issued when the applicant was under 16. In addition to the procedural changes, the Department of State unveiled a visual redesign of the passport. Scheduled for implementation around 2028, the new design, titled ‘Flight of the Eagle,’ will feature a larger gold Great Seal and interior pages with historical illustrations and an animated eagle motif. The update also includes a move to a standardized 38-page book and more secure packaging. During a recent livestream preview of the new pages, a portrait of President Donald Trump was visible, leading to speculation regarding the final design, though the State Department has not officially confirmed the inclusion of the president’s image. Industry experts suggest that individuals wishing to avoid the new design may have a limited window to apply using current versions.
