Overview
Updated Covid-19 vaccines for the 2026-27 respiratory virus season have faced availability delays through the U.S. federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. Although the Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccines several weeks prior to mid-September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had not yet enabled states to order them through this initiative.
This delay has created a disparity in access between privately insured children and those who are uninsured, underinsured, or Medicaid-eligible. While retail pharmacies began receiving doses for adults and some pediatric use, the lack of VFC procurement has resulted in a “two-tiered” system of access. Health officials noted that the gap forces pediatricians to choose between vaccinating privately insured patients or withholding shots from vulnerable populations who rely on the federal program.
