President Javier Milei has characterized the sovereignty of the islands as a ‘sacred’ issue and suggested that ‘favorable winds’ are blowing in favor of Argentina’s historical claim. Milei has threatened sanctions against companies involved in the Sea Lion offshore oil project, such as Rockhopper and Navitas, which is slated to begin drilling near the archipelago. He has also announced plans to establish a naval base in Tierra del Fuego.

In response, the United Kingdom has reaffirmed its sovereignty over the islands, describing its commitment to the territory as ‘absolute and unwavering.’ British officials, including Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defense Minister Wes Streeting, maintain the islands are a British Overseas Territory, citing the will of the inhabitants as expressed in a 2013 referendum.
