Late‑July 2026 polling already showed a solid majority of Americans opposed continued U.S. military action against Iran, with disapproval rates of 56‑61 % across Fox News, Ipsos, Pew and CBS surveys. Those polls highlighted uncertainty about the war’s objectives and growing frustration.

A new CBS News/YouGov poll of 2,193 adults conducted July 22‑24 deepened that picture. Sixty‑seven percent said the United States should end the war immediately, and 61 % expressed overall opposition to the conflict. Only 39 % approved of the military action. The poll also revealed that 86 % of respondents view reopening the Strait of Hormuz and securing oil supplies as the primary goal, while majorities also prioritize the freedom and safety of Iranians (79 %), a permanent halt to Iran’s nuclear program (76 %) and preventing Tehran from threatening other nations (72 %).

Expectations of a prolonged fight are common: 37 % foresee the war lasting months, 21 % years, and just 9 % weeks. Partisan splits remain stark—92 % of Democrats support ending the war versus only 30 % of Republicans—mirroring earlier demographic trends. The growing consensus for withdrawal adds pressure on lawmakers and the administration as the conflict extends beyond initial expectations.

Overall, the latest data confirm that U.S. public sentiment has continued to shift toward demanding an end to the Iran war, with broader concerns about objectives, costs and the likelihood of a long‑term engagement.
