Researchers in the United States have achieved significant milestones in quantum communication through both wired and wireless methods.
Initially, NIST researchers successfully transmitted entangled photons over 62 kilometers of existing real-world fiber-optic cabling. This experiment, conducted between NIST and the University of Maryland, served as a stress test for quantum networking systems by maintaining entanglement despite environmental noise such as temperature fluctuations and vibrations.
Following this, researchers from Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory demonstrated a wireless quantum transmission. They successfully sent photons via a laser through open air over a distance of approximately 13 miles between two locations in New York. This free-space optical link suggests the potential to expand quantum networks beyond the physical limitations of traditional fiber-optic infrastructure.
