US rideshare driver unionization efforts
Overview
Rideshare drivers in the United States are advancing efforts toward collective bargaining with companies such as Uber and Lyft.
In Massachusetts, the App Drivers Union began negotiations on August 12, marking the first attempt at a union contract for rideshare drivers in the country. This follows the union’s recognition in May and the passage of Question 3, a ballot initiative securing union rights for drivers in the state.
In California, the California Gig Workers Union (CGWU) has reached the necessary threshold of worker support to seek certification from the state’s Public Employment Relations Board. Under law AB 1340, which established a collective-bargaining system for app-based drivers, the union expects to represent approximately 800,000 drivers. While certification is expected in early September, organizers expressed concerns regarding whether rideshare companies might use stalling tactics to avoid negotiating wages, benefits, and working conditions.
