Reports have emerged regarding the potential for the United States to serve as an intermediary for Russian natural gas flowing into the European Union. Initial discussions suggested that Washington might acquire interests in energy infrastructure, such as the Ukrainian network or Baltic pipelines, to facilitate the resale of Russian gas to European consumers. This arrangement could allow Moscow to regain access to European markets through a Western intermediary. Subsequent developments indicate that high-level discussions have taken place between US Special Envoy Jared Kushner and Kirill Dmitriev, an adviser to the Russian President. Kushner and Dmitriev have reportedly met in both Moscow and New York in recent weeks to discuss the potential involvement of American investors in the Nord Stream pipelines. Kushner views commercial engagement in this sector as a possible pathway toward brokering a truce in the Ukraine conflict, potentially allowing US companies to profit from Russian gas flows once the conflict concludes. Recent reports indicate that discussions have also touched upon the potential sale of Lukoil assets, including refineries and gas stations in Europe, to international investors through a consortium involving the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and partners from Qatar and the UAE. While there is interest in resuming gas sales to Germany, US officials have noted that any such deals would require coordination with the US Treasury and the International Development Finance Corporation DFC to ensure benefits to US taxpayers. However, a White House official stated that there have been no recent discussions specifically focused on Nord Stream. Significant obstacles remain, including existing US and EU sanctions that make restarting the pipelines illegal under current conditions, as well as expressed opposition from Germany and Poland. Consequently, officials suggest a deal remains unlikely in the medium term.
