Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have launched an inquiry into a high-value diamond ring gifted to President Donald Trump by Belgian diamond firms. The 18-karat gold ring, which features 321 diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, was presented to the U.S. ambassador in ~~Belgium~~ Belgium, Bill White, on June 28 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The investigation focuses on the timing of the gift, which occurred shortly before the Trump administration exempted European natural diamonds from Section 301 tariffs on July 24. Senators expressed concern that the exchange could violate U.S. federal bribery laws or represent ‘inappropriate behavior’ suggesting that foreign companies can secure tariff exemptions through expensive gifts. Senator Warren has characterized the incident as ‘cartoonish corruption.’ The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) and jeweler David Gotlib have been asked to provide information regarding the ring’s value—estimated between $25,000 and $35,000—and any prior discussions regarding tariffs. AWDC President Isidore Mörsel presented the ring, which features the presidential seal.
