US social media news consumption trends

Overview

Recent studies indicate a significant shift in how American adults consume news, with social media platforms playing an increasingly prominent role. A Pew Research Center study found that 58% of U.S. adults consider social media an important source of information, a notable increase from 43% in 2022. The percentage of adults viewing these platforms as their primary news source more than doubled in that same period.

Further research from Syracuse University’s Center for the Creator Economy suggests that social media has surpassed traditional television news as the most frequent source of political and election news. Approximately 60% of respondents cited social platforms and independent outlets, such as YouTube, X, TikTok, and Substack, as news sources, compared to 32% who rely on traditional newsrooms. YouTube was identified as the leading individual source for political news at 16.5%, narrowly exceeding broadcast and cable TV at 16.1%. Additionally, 61% of Americans reported trusting well-known independent news creators as much as professional journalists or major news organizations regarding political topics.
