U.S. state livability and happiness rankings

Recent studies have highlighted various quality-of-life metrics for U.S. states. An analysis by WalletHub ranked Idaho as the best state to live in, citing high homeownership, low real estate taxes, and income growth. New Jersey followed in second place for overall livability, performing strongly in health, education, and safety despite ranking 49th in affordability due to high property taxes.

In a subsequent survey by WalletHub, New Jersey was identified as the second-happiest state in the country. This ranking was based on metrics such as depression rates, sleep patterns, suicide rates, and income growth, with Hawaii taking the top position.

A new WalletHub analysis has reaffirmed Hawaii as the happiest state in the country. This study evaluated states based on three dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community and environment. Hawaii secured the top spot through high life satisfaction, a low depression rate, and a 2.5% unemployment rate.

New Jersey maintained its second-place ranking for happiness, supported by the nation’s lowest depression rate and high levels of reported supportive personal relationships. Utah followed in third place, noted for having the highest level of economic security. Other top-five states included Idaho and Maryland. Conversely, West Virginia was identified as the least happy state, while Oregon ranked 42nd.

A WalletHub study utilizing 30 different metrics—including emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community factors—has reinforced these standings. New Jersey’s high ranking is attributed to having the second-highest share of households earning over $75,000 annually, low rates of divorce and separation, and low rates of suicide and depression. The study also noted that New Jersey has the lowest share of people reporting childhood traumatic events and the highest share of people with supportive relationships. In other regional rankings, Washington placed 19th, ahead of Oregon at 42nd.
