US student loan default surge
Entities: SAVE repayment plan · Federal student loan borrowers · Robert Farrington · U.S. federal student loans · United States Department of Education
Overview
After the COVID‑19 payment moratorium and a one‑year grace period expired in late 2024, federal student‑loan defaults in the United States began climbing sharply. By mid‑2025 the number of borrowers in default had reached about 5.3 million; by July 2026 it had risen to a record 9.5 million – roughly one in five borrowers – representing about $233 billion of the $1.7 trillion federal loan portfolio.
The surge follows the Trump administration’s dismantling of the SAVE income‑driven repayment plan, which increased monthly payment obligations and signaled a willingness to resume wage and Social Security garnishments. State‑level data show the highest default rates in the South, with Mississippi exceeding 28 % and other states such as Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Georgia and Texas also ranking among the worst.
Federal officials warn that continued narrowing of repayment options and ongoing economic pressures could drive further defaults, threatening borrowers’ credit and financial stability.
