The US theatrical market has seen a significant recovery in 2026, with domestic box office revenues approaching and eventually hitting the $4 billion milestone. This growth marks a return toward pre-pandemic levels, with summer 2026 projected to be one of the strongest seasons in recent memory. Initial reports in July indicated that domestic ticket sales were on track to exceed $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. This resurgence was attributed to a diverse range of successful films, including Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Toy Story 5’, and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’, as well as smaller hits like ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms’. By August, the summer season solidified its strength, surpassing the performance of previous post-pandemic years such as 2022, 2024, and 2025. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ emerged as a major driver of this success, recording $655 million domestically and $2.67 billion globally, while ‘The Odyssey’ contributed $460 million in North American earnings. In a move reflecting shifting industry strategies, Netflix announced it will deviate from its typical streaming-first model for the animated feature ‘Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’. The film is scheduled for a wide global theatrical release on November 5, 2027, with Sony Pictures Entertainment managing international distribution, before its subsequent arrival on the Netflix platform in late December 2027.
