A study published in JAMA Network Open by researchers from Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham has identified a correlation between the release of major music albums and an increase in fatal traffic accidents in the United States. Analyzing data from 2017 to 2022 from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), researchers examined 233,809 fatal crashes. They found a 15% 15.1% increase in traffic fatalities on days featuring highly anticipated releases from artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake, Kanye West, Bad Bunny, and Kendrick Lamar, compared to the ten days before and after those dates. This spike in deaths deaths, which saw the average rise from 120.9 to 139.1 deaths, coincides with an average 43% increase in music streaming volume on those days. Lead author Vishal Patel suggested the fatalities may be driven by “heightened phone usage as drivers attempt to stream new music,” such as selecting songs or managing playlists. While the study identifies a correlation, researchers emphasized that a direct causal link has not been proven, as it is difficult to confirm if specific drivers were using their phones immediately before a crash. The findings noted that the increase was particularly notable among male drivers, individuals under the age of 40, and those driving alone. The authors recommend that drivers set up their music before starting a vehicle to mitigate distraction risks.
